Early Treatment for Kids

Early treatment can start with children as early as 7 years old depending on the problem. Early treatment can prevent or simplify comprehensive orthodontic treatment later on. It can also create or maintain space to prevent dental extractions in the treatment plan. Jaw discrepancies, such as Class II or Class III bite patterns, can be improved using growth. This can improve the overall treatment outcome and in some cases, prevent the need for full braces or jaw surgery.

At 7 – 8 years of age, permanent upper incisors erupt. Impacted upper central incisors can be ectopic or impacted due to previous trauma. Upper lateral incisors may be impacted or ectopic on the palate due to severe crowding. Anterior cross-bite/under bite can also be assessed at this age to determine the need for early treatment. The adolescent growth spurt commences at 12 – 13 years for boys and 10.5 – 12 for girls. This is the time to assess the suitability for Class II bites to be improved with growth modification treatment.

Comprehensive Treatment for Teens

This usually involves having full braces for alignment to achieve a beautiful smile that functions well and facilitates good oral health for life.

Early teenage years from 12 – 14 years of age is the best time to have comprehensive orthodontic treatment. During this phase, the jaw bones and teeth are developing, making tooth movement quicker and less uncomfortable. The teeth and soft tissue also adapt a lot better to the changes.
Metal labial braces with colours are the most commonly used for early teen patients. However, for the mid-teens, clear braces (Clarity) are very popular.

Labial braces whether metal or clear (porcelain) are the most efficient, quickest, precise, reliable and economical for orthodontic treatment.
