An orthodontic assessment is required to decide if the space should be closed or opened. Usually, orthodontics is required to prepare the spaces for missing teeth to be replaced with dental implants or bridges. Hence, treatment involves a general dentist/prosthodontist, periodontist and other dental specialists.
In other cases where a premolar/molar tooth missing, orthodontics can be used to close the space, thus avoiding the need for dental implant or bridge. This can be advantageous as there is much less cost and maintenance in the long-term. Extra devices like temporary anchorage devices (TAD) are usually required to assist the orthodontic tooth movement.
