The treatment modality again depends on the cause of the open bite. A child should stop thumb sucking by the age of 4 – 5 years of age before the eruption of the permanent upper incisors. Parents can try various techniques of negative and positive reinforcement etc. Otherwise, the child may consider wearing a “tongue crib appliance” which will prevent the thumb and tongue from being placed between the teeth. Minor dental alignment can be performed with braces or clear aligners. On the other hand, if the anterior open bite is a result of the jaw pattern, a combination of orthodontics and jaw surgery will be required.
